The wire gate belay loop retainer has an opening width that can vary from carabiner to carabiner. Some may also require different levels of force to open fully.

Without manipulation of the primary carabiner gate, the wire gate has an average opening width of 8.83 millimeters (0.3475 inches), with more force being required to achieve this on some carabiners. 

By rotating the primary carabiner gate for less interference, the average wire gate opening width can be increased to around 14.5 millimeters (.574 inches).
